Escape the hustle of Marrakech with a full-day trip to the serene coastal city of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador. Enjoy a refreshing change of scenery, sea breeze, and authentic Moroccan coastal charm. This Essaouira day trip from Marrakech includes cultural stops, scenic drives, and plenty of free time to explore this laid-back UNESCO-listed city.
Your journey begins at 08:30 AM from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Travel through the Haouz plains toward the small town of Chichaoua, where we’ll stop for a short coffee break. Continuing on, we reach Sidi Mokhtar, passing through forests of Argan trees – native only to Morocco. If you’re lucky, you may spot goats climbing the trees, a unique sight perfect for photos.
We’ll also visit a women-run Argan oil cooperative to witness the traditional methods of extracting this “liquid gold.” Learn about the culinary and cosmetic uses of this iconic Moroccan oil.
Upon arrival in Essaouira, start with a visit to the fishing port, where colorful blue boats bob in the water and fresh seafood is brought in daily. Explore the Portuguese fortifications including the Skala de la Ville, which houses old bronze cannons facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Continue into the Medina of Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, with its 18th-century ramparts, winding alleys, and whitewashed buildings with blue shutters. Key highlights include:
La Scala Fortress
Bab Laalouj – one of the city’s main gates
The Mellah – the historical Jewish quarter
Artisan galleries, thuya wood workshops, and craft boutiques
Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at one of the harbor stalls or choose a local restaurant within the Medina. Essaouira is known for its relaxed vibe and exceptional fish dishes.
After lunch, take a leisurely stroll along Essaouira Beach, ideal for sunbathing or watching windsurfers and kitesurfers in action. You may also explore the Kasbah, a former military bastion offering panoramic views over the ocean.
In the late afternoon, we begin our drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening.
