Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Casablanca – The Jewish Capital of Morocco

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca. After settling in, you’ll explore the vibrant Jewish life of the city, starting with the Museum of Moroccan Judaism—the only one of its kind in the Arab world. You’ll also visit the magnificent Beth El Synagogue, known for its stained-glass windows and vibrant community. The day continues with a walk through the old Mellah, where Jewish families once lived in harmony alongside Muslim neighbors. Enjoy a traditional Kosher dinner at Cercle de L’Union, followed by an overnight stay in Casablanca.

Day 2:Casablanca – Rabat – Meknes

In the morning, you’ll head to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. Here, you’ll visit the Talmud Torah Synagogue, the Jewish Community Center, and take in the elegant surroundings of this coastal city. From there, you’ll continue to Meknes—an imperial city where Jewish heritage runs deep. Discover its ancient Mellah, the Jewish cemetery, and remnants of once-thriving synagogues. The evening concludes with a restful overnight in Meknes.

Day 3:Meknes – Volubilis – Fes

Depart Meknes for a scenic journey through the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before reaching Fes. This city is often referred to as the spiritual heart of Morocco, and it holds some of the most important Jewish sites in the country. Upon arrival, you’ll visit Slat al Fassayine, one of the oldest synagogues in the Mellah of Fes, and the Em Habanim Synagogue. The day ends with a Kosher dinner at Dragon Restaurant and an overnight stay in Fes.

Day 4: Immersive Jewish Experience in Fes

This day is dedicated to a deeper understanding of Jewish life in Fes. You’ll explore the narrow alleys of the historic Mellah, visit the Jewish cemetery where ancient tombstones recount centuries of tradition, and meet leaders from the local Jewish community. Highlights include the home of Rafael Danan, President of the Jewish community (subject to availability), and a special lunch at the Center Maimonides. You may also participate in a prayer service before spending another night in Fes.

 

Day 5: Fes – Sefrou – Beni Mellal – Marrakech

Depart Fes for the charming town of Sefrou, once home to a large Jewish population and still known for its interfaith harmony. After visiting local synagogues and walking through its historic lanes, continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. The drive is scenic and peaceful, offering glimpses of Berber villages and lush valleys. Arrive in Marrakech by evening and settle into a Kosher-friendly accommodation.

 

Day 6: Jewish Heritage of Marrakech

Explore the vibrant Jewish roots of Marrakech, beginning with the Mellah, founded in 1558. Visit the Beth El Synagogue and Rabbi Pinhas Synagogue, two living centers of Jewish worship and memory. Walk through the Miaara Cemetery, the largest Jewish cemetery in Morocco, where ornate tombstones date back centuries. Enjoy dinner at the Dar Ima Kosher restaurant before another overnight in Marrakech.

 

Day 7: Pilgrimage to Sacred Sites near Marrakech

Today, you’ll explore the spiritual connections between Jewish and Berber traditions in the surrounding High Atlas region. Visit the Jewish Zaouia of Telouet, a site of reverence for both Jews and Muslims. Continue to the Shrine of Moulay Ighi, where Jewish pilgrimage once flourished. Optional visits to other regional shrines, such as Ourigane, can also be arranged. Return to Marrakech for the night.

 

Day 8: Marrakech – Essaouira

Travel to the coastal town of Essaouira, known for its rich Jewish history and artistic spirit. Once home to a large Jewish community, it remains a symbol of Jewish-Muslim coexistence. Walk through the Mellah, visit the beautifully restored Slat Lkahal Synagogue, and see the home and synagogue of Rabbi Chaim Pinto, a revered tzaddik. Enjoy a relaxed evening with a seafood dinner (Kosher options available) and stay overnight in Essaouira.

 

Day 9: Essaouira – Agadir – Taroudant

Depart Essaouira and follow the Atlantic coastline to Agadir, where the local Jewish community remains active. After a short visit, continue inland to Taroudant, known as the “Grandmother of Marrakech” for its historic charm. Explore the rare adobe synagogue in Arazan, a hidden gem that tells the story of Jewish life in the Souss Valley. Overnight in Taroudant.

 

Day 10: Taroudant – Ouarzazate – Erfoud

Begin a scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains, with panoramic views of valleys, oases, and ancient kasbahs. En route, stop in Telouet to explore its Jewish shrine and the ruins of the Pasha Glaoui’s kasbah. Continue through the desert gateway town of Ouarzazate and into the Sahara’s edge at Erfoud, where you’ll spend the night preparing for a desert pilgrimage.

 

Day 11: Pilgrimage in the Sahara

Spend the day visiting sacred Jewish shrines in and around Rissani and Erfoud. Highlights include the Tomb of Rabbi Shmuel AbuHatzeira, father of the legendary Baba Sali, and the Tomb of Rabbi Shlomo Ben Lhans. Learn about the once-thriving Jewish communities of the Sahara and take part in traditional prayers or blessings. Optional camel trek and sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes can be arranged. Overnight in a desert lodge or luxury camp.

 

Day 12: Erfoud – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes

Depart the desert and head north through Midelt, a mountain town known for its mineral mines and past Jewish population. Stop in Ifrane, a picturesque town nicknamed “Little Switzerland,” for lunch or coffee. Continue to Fes, arriving by evening. If it’s Friday, enjoy a special Shabbat dinner to mark the end of your journey in a meaningful way. Overnight in Fes.

 

Day 13: Fes – Rabat – Casablanca

Take a relaxed return journey westward, with stops in Rabat for last-minute shopping or sightseeing. Optional detour to El Jadida, where a small but significant Jewish community still exists, including a community center and synagogue. Arrive in Casablanca for a final night of rest and reflection.

 

Day 14: Departure from Casablanca

Your Jewish heritage tour of Morocco comes to an end. You’ll be transferred to the airport with assistance for your international departure, carrying memories of a lifetime.
